


This snake has quite a bit of color variation. Depending on their range, they are known to have green, yellow and blue populations.

A wash of orange-red is often present on the chin, sides of the head. Like other garter snake, they have light stripes that go down the body. Texas indigo snakes are predominantly black in color, with a high sheen which gives their smooth scales a remarkable iridescent hue. Five minutes into my very first outing into the mesquite thickets near our new home, I found this gorgeous Texas indigo snake! It looked very similar to the endemic Florida indigo snake in my home state, but the unusual facial pattern threw me off and I had to search for a proper species identification. It is one of the largest snakes in North America, smaller only than the rarer and protected Eastern Blue Indigo found mainly in Florida and Georgia. I’m back from a bit of a hiatus!
